When Google reported its earnings last week, the company made a point to say that YouTube was on track to become a “profitable business.” Today, YouTube seems intent on driving home the issue, taking to their business blog in a post called “myth busters” that may have been more aptly titled “the media doesn’t know what it’s talking about.” The company writes of the conflicting media and analyst reports that YouTube is losing as much as $500 million per year that “it seems people can pick any number to fit any theory they have about our business” and that YouTube is “at a point where growth is definitely good for our bottom line, not bad.” Moreover, YouTube claims that “over 70% of Ad Age Top 100 marketers ran campaigns on YouTube in 2008.” In other words, YouTube seem quite pleased with the state of their business, and quite frustrated with continued reports that the site does a poor job of monetizing and is a huge money pit for Google.
